Susana obtained her B.Sc in Biochemistry at the University of Oviedo in June 1998. Soon after, she moved to Madrid to work in the laboratory of Prof. Ana Aranda at the Medical Research Institute (IIB-CSIC). The topic of her thesis was the antagonism between thyroid hormone receptors(TRs) and the Ras pathway. Thanks to this work, Susana was awarded the “Premio Extraordinario de Doctorado” by the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) in 2003 and the Novartis prize in Tumor Endocrine Research in 2005.
In 2005, she moved to the laboratory of Prof. Claus Nerlov first at EMBL-Monterotondo (Italy) and then at the Institute of Stem Cell Research, MRC-University of Edinburgh in UK. During this period, she studied the role of the transcription factors C/EBPbeta and alpha in mammary gland stem cell and luminal progenitors and collaborated in the characterization of those factors in skin development and liver metabolism.
In February 2011, she joined Dr. Christopher Heeschen group at the CNIO as staff scientist. In this lab, her work was focused on the characterization and in vivo tracking of tumor- propagating cells in a mouse model of pancreatic cancer.
In March 2015, she moved to the laboratory of Dr. Héctor Peinado for the study of melanoma in mouse models and patients for the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic tools. She is currently focus on the role of exosomes in the formation of the pre-metastatic niche in the lymph node.
