Orlando Domínguez

Orlando Domínguez obtained his MSc and PhD degrees in Biology from the Universidad de Oviedo, in 1984 and 1993, respectively. During this period he developed the first molecular genotyping procedure for the HLA-B27 allelic variants under the supervision of C. López-Larrea. His PhD thesis presented an original system for the isolation of unknown genetic sequences of interest while studying gene structure and regulation of genetic diseases.

Orlando joined Prodesfarma S.A. pharmaceutical company as a postdoctoral scientist in 1994, to search for novel inflammation and cancer genes as potential therapeutic targets. This project was performed under the supervision of R. Pujol-Borrell from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona.

In 1998 he moved to L. Blanco’s Lab at the Centro de Biología Molecular "Severo Ochoa", CSIC-UAM in Madrid, where he contributed to the cloning and first descriptions of two novel mammalian DNA polymerases, POLL and POLM, subsequenlty found to be involved in DNA double-strand break repair processes.

He joined the CNIO in 2000 as Head of the Genomics Core Unit. Here he coordinated the implementation of a variety of services, both at the single locus and at genomic wide levels. Examples of developments and resources are a complete cDNA microarray production facility, the construction of sequence-verified shRNA libraries -for both mouse and human genes, and services for DNA capillary sequencing, epigenetics-specific analyses, transgenic mouse genotyping, and the more recent RNA/DNA deep-sequencing related services for a number of different applications.
