To mark World Cancer Day on 4th February, the first woman to climb the world’s 14 eight-thousanders, Edurne Pasaban, the actor Carlos Hipólito, and Trial and Enduro world champion Laia Sanz encourage you to give money to CNIO Friends in support of cancer research

#CNIOStopCancer focuses on one of the lessons the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us: that only research will allow us to respond promptly to health challenges, especially cancer, which is still the second biggest cause of death in the world

The campaign encourages people to join the CNIO Friends community of donors, which has created an International Programme to attract talented scientists and promote cancer research projects in areas such as childhood cancer, brain metastases, immunotherapy, and the development of new drugs

The mountain climber Edurne Pasaban, the first woman to climb the world’s 14 eight-thousanders, the actor Carlos Hipólito, and the Trial and Enduro world champion Laia Sanz are starring in the new #CNIOStopCancer campaign launched by the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) to mark World Cancer Day on February 4.

“I am joining forces with CNIO, one of the world’s leading research organisations, to achieve a shared dream: to put a stop to cancer,” explains Edurne in the campaign video. “Life has taught me that, if you can dream it, you can do it. Now more than ever, cancer research must not stop.”

“Research is the only way to eradicate cancer, so now more than ever it needs our support,” says Carlos Hipólito. “I invite you to join CNIO with me. Let’s stop cancer, for you, for me, for all of us.

“Motorcycling has taught me that if you strive to excel you can achieve great things,” says Laia Sanz in the #CNIOStopCancer video. “That’s why I am joining forces with CNIO, because they are working tirelessly to eradicate cancer. They need all our support.”

In a year marked by an unprecedented health crisis in recent years, #CNIOStopCancer focuses on one of the lessons the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us: that only research will allow us to respond promptly to health challenges, especially cancer, which is still the second biggest cause of death in the world. The CNIO campaign also reminds us that the whole of society can join the cause, by becoming a member of the CNIO Friends community of donors (www.cnio.es/donar).

The campaign is being launched on multiple channels and, as well as videos and promotion on social media, it is also present on physical and digital MUPIs displayed throughout Spain from 26 January and throughout February in shopping centres and out in the streets. These billboards will also be posted around Madrid’s railway stations.

Over the past seven years, the CNIO Friends community has become a means of attracting and engaging research talent. Thanks to the support of donations received through this community, the Centre has established an International CNIO Friends Contracts Programme for young scientists to carry out competitive cancer research projects. To date, these projects have covered areas such as childhood cancer, brain metastases, immunotherapy, and the development of new drugs.

In addition to the generous participation of Pasaban, Hipólito and Sanz, #CNIOStopCancer has also been made possible thanks to the altruistic collaboration of companies Exterior Plus and JCDecaux.

The audiovisual pieces included in the #CNIOStopCancer campaign have been produced by Amparo Garrido, coordinator of Institutional Image and Science and Culture Activities at CNIO.

About CNIO Friends

The CNIO Friends initiative was launched in December 2014, in order to meet a growing demand within society reflected, year after year, by reports of public perception of science: interest in patronage and new forms of citizen participation in science and research and, more specifically, in the field of medicine and health. At that time, the promoter of this initiative and director of the CNIO, Maria A. Blasco reminded us that “the generosity of those who support us is crucial, and the new CNIO Friends platform is a way to bridge the gap with society to thank them for their efforts and explain more about what we do.”

Over the last few years, the CNIO Friends association has received the support of patient associations and prominent public figures such as Enrique Arce, Luz Casal, Christina Rosenvinge and María Hervás, who participated in the 2020 edition of the #CNIOStopCancer campaign.
