Who we are: aims

The objectives of the CNIO Biobank include:

  • To facilitate the access of human biological samples to researchers at CNIO and other collaborating institutions, provided that they meet the scientific and ethical requirements in accordance with Spanish legislation.
  • To encourage translational research, fostering biomedical knowledge and the development of new techniques and biomarkers.
  • To create and maintain a critical mass of normal and pathological biological materials - collected and hosted under optimal conditions - that will be used in biomedical research under the legal framework for biobanking. Samples will be selected and stored depending on the best interest and demand of the Centre’s research groups as well as other institutions in the consortium.
  • To ensure respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, protecting the dignity and privacy of donors when processing personal data.
  • To provide technical support, advice and infrastructure to CNIO research groups, including collaborative groups, by becoming a tool for strategic development that aims to improve cancer research and related processes.
  • To establish a quality policy for all procedures in relation to the management of human biological samples for research at the CNIO.
  • To establish collaborations with other biobanks, research centres and hospitals.
