Biosketch: Elena Castro

Elena Castro was born in Salamanca, Spain, in 1979. She attended Medicine School at the Universidad de Salamanca from where she received her MD in 2003 with first class honours. As undergraduate student she was awarded with training fellowships in cancer research from “Instituto Salud Carlos III” in 2001, Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) in 2002 and “Centro de Investigación del Cancer - Universidad de Salamanca” in 2002-2003.

Dr. Castro trained as Medical Oncologist at the Hospital Universitario de Salamanca, obtaining her license in 2008. She also received her PhD from the Universidad de Salamanca in 2010 for her work in the role of DNA repair polymorphisms in the breast cancer response to cytotoxic chemotherapy. She has also obtained a Master degree in Molecular Oncology from the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO).

In early 2009 Dr. Castro joined the Cancer Genetics department at The Institute of Cancer Research, United Kingdom, where she worked as post-doctoral researcher in Professor Rosalind Eeles group. During her 4 years at this group her research focused in the clinical impact and molecular characterisation of Prostate Cancer in BRCA mutation carriers. She was also coordinator for several targeted screening studies for familiar Prostate Cancer lead by Professor Eeles. Dr. Castro also complemented her laboratory training with a clinical fellowship at the Royal Marsden hospital Academic Urology Unit where she acquired a broad experience in the treatment and management of Prostate Cancer and was involved in several Phase II and III clinical trials.

Dr. Castro has authored several papers in peer-reviewed journals, including first author manuscripts published in top cancer journals. She has received several grants and awards including an ESMO Research Fellowship (2010-2011), a SEOM Young Investigator award (2006), two ASCO merit awards (2011 and 2012), and an IMPAKT-ESMO merit award (2009). Dr. Castro joined the Prostate Cancer and Genitourinary Tumours group at CNIO in January 2013.
