The comedian has altruistically appeared in a CNIO video because “cancer affects us all (…) and I want to live in a society capable of standing up to it”.

The number of cases is increasing, but in developed countries, cancer mortality has been reduced “thanks to the research,” José Mota recalls in the CNIO video.

The donations will be used entirely to hire young researchers through the ‘CNIO Friends’ initiative.

World Cancer Day is celebrated on 4 February.

“I’m José Mota and my mind is whirring… I’ve been going over it for several days… to see how I can communicate this so that the message really hits home!”

For once José Mota does not want to make you laugh. He wants to help raise awareness about the importance of cancer research, altruistically starring in the campaign run by the National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) to mark World Cancer Day on 4th February.

“I want it to reach you: we know that today half of all cancers are cured. And we also know that many cancers end up being similar to a chronic disease. Do you know why? Thanks to research” José Mota stresses in the CNIO vídeo.

The comedian wanted to star in the CNIO campaign because “cancer affects us all. We tend to think that it will not affect us, but directly or indirectly it will affect us, and I want to live in a society capable of standing up to it.”

“Let’s be part of the solution”

Hence the motto: Let’s be part of the solution. More research, less cancer.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) expects a 47% increase in the overall incidence of cancer in the next two decades, a phenomenon associated among other factors with population ageing (incidence is the number of new cases of a disease in a given population and period.)

But there is also good news. Despite the increase in the number of cancer cases, in developed countries, a decrease in cancer mortality has been achieved through early detection programmes and treatments.

As indicated in the 2023 report by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), “mortality from cancer in Spain has experienced a sharp decline in recent decades”, a trend that reflects “improvements in the survival of patients with tumours due to preventive activities, early diagnosis campaigns, therapeutic advances, and, in men, the decrease in the prevalence of smoking.”

Donations for contracts to hire young researchers

The knowledge that feeds into designing prevention programmes and improving diagnostic tests and therapies is only possible thanks to research.

Mota encourages society to contribute directly to the research against cancer carried out at CNIO with contributions to the CNIO Friends philanthropic initiative.

These donations will be entirely used to hire young researchers to open new lines of research to understand, diagnose and tackle cancer.
