European Researchers' Night 2024. CNIO enthusiasm overflows and spreads into social media and classrooms

04.10.2024

Research needs you

Everything happens very fast on CNIO European Researchers’ Night! Hours of planning, of preparing the most surprising experiment, the most striking image… And now it’s time to receive lots of questions from hundreds of eager visitors of all ages. The ideal audience for CNIO volunteers!

As there is not enough time to show the entire center to more than three hundred people, visitors at the CNIO Auditorium can follow a live connection (by videoconference) with correspondents located in three key facilities for research: the cell culture area, the liquid nitrogen room and the laboratories.

Extracting tomato DNA, observing cells with different microscopy techniques and understanding how to decipher the 3-D structure of proteins are some of the hands-on activities offered.

But CNIO Night also manages to overcome physical barriers. Those who could not sign up, or were not in Madrid, had the opportunity to attend an Instagram live from @CNIOstopcancer. The video is already posted on CNIO Instagram account.

Here you can see a brief excerpt of it:

Brand new this year, and a big hit with the audience, was our high school webinar “¿Quieres investigar? ¡Pregúntanos!”. Fifty classrooms from highschools in many regions of the country logged on and made wonderful questions.

The European Researchers’ Night is a European Union initiative held simultaneously in 350 European cities. In Madrid it is promoted by the Regional Ministry of Science, Universities and Innovation and coordinated by the Fundación para el Conocimiento madri+d. The project is funded by the European Union within the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program – Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions.

At the CNIO, the conference is part of the Center’s outreach strategy through the Dean’s Office, together with the CNIO Training Program and the Communications department.
