In its efforts to support cancer research, La Roche-Posay of L’Oréal Group will keep its cooperation agreement with the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), signed in 2019, financing CNIO-led projects throughout 2020

The funds will go to the CNIO Friends programme, aimed at raising awareness and promoting support to cancer research at the CNIO

La Roche-Posay, specialising in dermatologic skincare solutions, is a permanent supporter of science and scientific or medical breakthroughs. It has now renewed its support to the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), showing its full commitment to the fight against cancer.

The #ResearchIsLife project

In 2020, for the second year in a row, La Roche-Posay will again support research on cancer and give money to CNIO-led projects. The money will go to CNIO Friends, a project aimed at attracting supporters of cancer research that has enabled CNIO to start new lines of research in metastasis, child cancer, pancreatic cancer or the use of nanotechnology in cancer treatment, among others. As to the #ResearchIsLife project, it is framed within L’Oréal Group’s Sharing Beauty With All programme, consisting of a series of sustainability goals to be achieved by 2020. “We are really happy to strengthen our commitment to cancer patient care by supporting such a renowned research centre as CNIO, where they do pioneering work on life-saving cancer treatments,” said Patricia Sarasúa, General Manager at La Roche-Posay Spain.

In the words of CNIO Director Maria Blasco, “getting continuous support is very important to us at CNIO. We have individual and corporate supporters that are helping us attract talented scientists and start or develop ground-breaking cancer research lines. We are really proud to have La Roche-Posay and L’Oréal Group with us, as they can help us make progress by supporting the valuable work of CNIO researchers.”

New this year, the oncologist and researcher Miguel Ángel Quintela will represent CNIO at the ONCOFARMA Special Seminar, “El paciente oncológico y el farmacéutico, el binomio perfecto” (Cancer Patient/Pharmacist: A Match Made in Heaven), organised by the Professional Pharmacists Association with the support of La Roche-Posay. The seminar will focus on the pharmaceutical care of cancer patients and the need to highlight the importance of doing research in this field.

CNIO is a public centre specialising in cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. It is considered to be among the best of its kind in the world for both its numerous scientific findings and its development of innovative treatments. Standing among the world’s top ten cancer research centres and being the second in Europe, it covers the entire spectrum of R&D activities, from basic research to clinical trials, transferring knowledge to the National Health System and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry in fast, effective ways. Nearly 400 scientists work at CNIO, studying the most common types of cancer as well as rare tumours and metastatic cancer. In addition, CNIO carries out a drug development programme and a clinical research initiative, run by oncologists working in Spanish hospitals, conducts clinical trials and offers genetic diagnostic and consulting services to thousands of families.

About the CNIO Friends project

In 2014, CNIO launched CNIO Friends, an initiative whose goal is to attract supporters of cancer research. The programme has had a real impact on research on cancer. Thanks to the support of over 1350 donors, a CNIO Friends recruitment programme has been established to engage young scientists from all over the world, who have to go through a strict hiring process. About La Roche-Posay’s #InYourSkin oncology project

The La Roche-Posay Thermal Treatment Centre has been welcoming high numbers of cancer patients since 2009. Since 2013, La Roche-Posay has been doing research on skin problems from cancer treatment, in an effort to improve treatment adherence and reduce skin reactions. The French brand has established the Eskimo Group, a working group made of dermatologists and oncologists who have identified and analysed the possible skin side effects of cancer treatments, recommending suitable skincare and makeup products for patients who are undergoing cancer therapy.

One of the initiatives supported by La Roche-Posay to help people with cancer is the Skincare Units, run in hospitals and clinics throughout the country. In these workshops, patients can learn how to take care of their skin before, during and after cancer treatment from healthcare professionals and volunteers.
