15 million Euros for the Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence to hire the best young talent
The 18 research centres distinguished as Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence are announcing the third edition of the “la Caixa”-Severo Ochoa International PhD Programme. This initiative, financed by Obra Social “la Caixa”, will provide support for hiring 46 students to carry out their doctoral thesis projects over the next four years.
After an international selection process, scholarships will be awarded to students with the greatest talent and the best academic track record. Unanimously recognised by the educational community, this initiative trains students to be internationally competitive, as stated by the State Secretary for Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela, during the diploma awarding ceremony for the scholarship winners from the programme’s previous edition.
The “la Caixa”-Severo Ochoa International PhD Programme is the continuation of the previous International “la Caixa” PhD Fellowship Programme in Biomedicine, which began in 2008 and will run until 2016. In 2012, Obra Social “la Caixa” signed an agreement with the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness to increase its support for training young scientists in all scientific disciplines, tied in with the Severo Ochoa Excellence Accreditation. Between 2013 and 2018, Obra Social “la Caixa” will have contributed more than 15 million Euros to this new programme. This investment demonstrates the strategic relevance of topRrate research for this entity.
In this regard, the Directors of the Severo Ochoa Centres of Excellence agree that this Obra Social “la Caixa” programme is an example to follow. Scientific research should not, and cannot depend on public funds alone. To this end, and so as to sustain and increase our R&D and innovation
system’s competitiveness, the investment of private entities in quality science, with a long-term perspective, is crucial.
The Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence Award, granted by the Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation from the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, aims to promote excellence in scientific research in Spain. Centres are selected by independent scientific committees, formed by internationally-renowned researchers. The accredited centres receive one-million Euros per year over a four-year period.
