Maria Blasco has received the XXXVI Lección Memorial Fernández-Cruz Award

The award acknowledges Blasco’s work in the field of ageing and improvements in life expectancy

The director of the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) received the 36th Lección Memorial Fernández-Cruz Award yesterday from the Regional Minister of Health of the Community of Madrid, Rafael Sánchez Martos, and Arturo Fernández-Cruz, president of the Fernández-Cruz Foundation. The award acknowledges Maria Blasco’s contribution to the progress made in extending life expectancy.

The award giving ceremony was held within the framework of the 36th Lección Memorial Fernández-Cruz event, dedicated, this year, to Medical and Scientific Progress in Delaying our Biological Clock’. During the event, which was held at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital, Maria Blasco gave a conference entitled ‘Telomeres; new therapeutic targets for cancer and ageing’, in which she reviewed the various lines of research her group is following at the CNIO.

José Luis Álvarez-Sala, Dean of the School of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid, was also present at the event, together with Julio Mayol and José Soto, medical director and managing director of the San Carlos Clinical Hospital, respectively. 

Blasco has joined a prestigious list of people who have received awards from the Fernández-Cruz Foundation, including Elizabeth Blackburn, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2009, Juan Carlos Izpisúa, Carlos López Otin and Joan Massagué, among others.
