Help us to stop cancer

The CNIO Dean's Office organises the perfect finale to the year with the celebration of ‘Lab Day 2014’

Next Tuesday, December 9th, the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) celebrates its fourth Lab Day. The event, organised by the Office of Academic Affairs (Dean’s Office) with CNIO pre-doctoral (CNIOSA) and postdoctoral (CNIO?PDA) researchers, is designed to promote interactions between different research groups and to give visibility to their work.

In the words of the Dean, Maria S. Soengas, this is “a day of celebration by and for CNIO” that always receives a great public response. “The Lab Day is a great opportunity for research groups to showcase their work for their peers, share knowledge and receive advice.”

This year, the Lab Day will feature two exceptional guest speakers: Glenn Merlino, Deputy Director of NCI Center for Cancer Research, and one of the foremost experts on the use of animal models for gene discovery and drug development, who will give a talk On mice and human (research) at the NIH: Training and Scientific Career Opportunities. The second speaker, Ángel Sánchez, CEO of iDeals, a part of the Everis Group, will speak about the Elevator pitch or how to sell yourself in 5 minutes, aimed at promoting awareness of scientific entrepreneurship among the students of the Centre.

SCIENTISTS, COMMUNICATORS AND ARTISTS

“We are very satisfied with the participation,” said Eleonora Lapi, Jasminka Boskovic and Daniela Cerezo, co-organisers of the event, in which over 20 volunteers have contributed. “This year we received 65

posters of scientific work from all the CNIO programmes. An ad hoc committee has selected seven projects that will be presented as oral communications on Tuesday.”

The highly anticipated awards ceremony will take place at the end of the day. The Jesus Serra Foundation will award the best oral communication and the three best scientific posters. The five students with the highest impact factor publications of the year will also be given awards.

The Dean’s Office mentions that the selection process for the winner has been very difficult, given the high level of the work presented.

We can now display the logo that will mark the event —designed by Daniela Cerezo, from the Melanoma Group—, which depicts the alma mater of CNIO: research as a tool to disarm cancer.

Congratulations to all candidates and may the best contestant win!
