Hitting their 32nd edition this year, the Prismas are among the most prestigious awards given to the promotion of the scientific culture in Spain

The CNIO website has been awarded an honourable mention in the category of new media by the Prismas Awards 2019 – the most prestigious awards given to the promotion of the scientific culture in Spain. In their decision, the jury emphasises the website’s “innovative concept” and the “modern, user-friendly layout” for the contents and activities of a research centre.

One of CNIO’s goals is to bring its scientific findings closer to society. To achieve this goal, in 2018, CNIO launched a website that invites visitors to take a look at what the Centre is doing. Thus, the Prismas-awarded website is meant to be a platform bringing CNIO closer to citizens with an interest in science, scientists, benefactors, journalists, artists, students, patients… The website offers lots of multimedia content – videos, photos and texts communicating science and sharing the knowledge produced by CNIO scientists. Moreover, the CNIO website is the gateway to CNIO Friends, an initiative targeted at the people who want to contribute to cancer research.

“It is one of CNIO’s main goals to open the centre’s doors to all stakeholders in society, and our current website is the strongest evidence of this goal being wired into our DNA,” says CNIO Director Maria Blasco.

The new website was designed and launched by a team led by Amparo Garrido, Coordinator of Institutional Image and Outreach to Society at CNIO. “At this Office, we are satisfied that our efforts to bring science closer to society have been rewarded by the Prismas Awards. Also, we would like to thank science journalist Mónica Salomone for her contribution to the writing of our texts,” Garrido said.

The members of the jury gathered on 28 and 29 September to give the awards. Led by CSIC researcher Lluis Montoliu, they were Esther Rodríguez-Belmonte, Professor at the University of A Coruña; María José Rodríguez Malmierca, Head of eLearning at the Galicia Supercomputing Centre (CESGA); Javier Salas Quesada, science journalist and contributor to Materia; Marta Palomo de Udaeta, researcher and science communicator; and César López García, Head of the Promotion of Scientific Culture Unit at the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). Marcos Pérez Maldonado, Head of Service of the Science Museums in A Coruña, served as secretary to the jury.

The Prismas Casa de las Ciencias a la Divulgación Awards are granted by the Science Museums in the City of A Coruña in recognition of the efforts to promote the scientific culture and in support of the professionals and organisations working to popularise science.
