The CNIO welcomes internationally recognised researchers Peter Petzelbauer and André Nussenzweig, the beneficiaries of the Jesús Serra Foundation’s Visiting Researchers Programme

Petzelbauer’s research will focus on psoriasis and skin cancer and Nussenzweig will study DNA damage and repair

Yesterday, the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) and the Jesús Serra Foundation officially welcomed the beneficiaries of the Jesús Serra Foundation’s Visiting Researchers Programme for 2014. During the event, which took place at the CNIO, Peter Petzelbauer -from the Medical University of Vienna? and André Nussenzweig -from the US National Cancer Institute- outlined the main objectives of their collaborative research projects that will be carried out during their stay at the CNIO.

During the welcome event, Petzelbauer pointed out that his research will focus on the genetic and molecular analysis of psoriasis and squamous cell carcinoma –the latter is a very aggressive type of skin cancer that can also affect other organs whose biology remains poorly understood. André Nussenzweig, for his part, will investigate methods to visualise and analyse DNA damage, which will provide us with a better understanding of how this process that is intimately related to cancer occurs.

Petzelbauer and Nussenzweig, Respectively, will join the Genes, Development and Disease Group led by Erwin Wagner -who also heads the BBVA Foundation-CNIO Cancer Cell Biology Programme- and the Genomic Instability Group, led by Óscar Fernández-Capetillo.

The event was also attended by CNIO´s Director Maria Blasco, who underlined the value of the programme; “the Jesús Serra Foundation provides the CNIO with an opportunity to attract leading scientists in key research areas from all around the world.  This opens the way for the emergence of synergies and the development of a critical spirit, leading to advances in fundamental areas of biomedicine.” She also highlighted how “today´s science, precisely, feeds on the development of such synergies, which is why we are so grateful to the Foundation for their efforts and support of research excellence.”

Federico Halpern, President of the Jesús Serra Foundation, expressed his gratitude during the presentation, underlining the good work done by the CNIO for the launch of this programme; “the Visiting Researchers Programme allows us to support and encourage scientific research in Spain, and to work with key experts in the field who carry out research projects that open novel lines of investigation of great importance for us all. Above all, we would like thank the CNIO for their collaboration, and hope to continue working with this programme for many years to come.”
