A total of 150 people—the youngest was just 6 and the oldest 80—came to the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) last Friday, September 27, to attend the biggest night for science at the Centre: Researchers’ Night.
During the activities, organised entirely by voluntary contributions from 30 young researchers, guests could view a virtual tour through the facilities thanks to a video project recorded by pre-doctoral (CNIOSA) and post-doctoral (CNIO-PDA) scientists from CNIO; CNIO for Kids (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAuv84g7vNI).
Furthermore, participants became real molecular biologists and extracted DNA from tomatoes. The activities ended with a speed dating session with researchers, in which the visitors didn’t hesitate to ask them about the Institution´s lines of research, the relevance of this research to society or about their scientific careers.
Researchers’ Night is an activity promoted by the European Commission and coordinated by the Madrid Regional Government and the madri+d Foundation, whose aim is to seduce society with the latest scientific discoveries, presentations and workshops. Each year, more than 300 European cities participate all at once in a great night for science.
