CNIO Arte is an initiative that establishes contact between renowned international scientists and renowned artists to explore common territories between scientific research and artistic creation. It has the support of Banco Santander Foundation and in its first two editions it has also had the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science.
The culmination of each annual edition of CNIO Arte is the exhibition of the work created by the artist for that occasion and its subsequent sale to raise funds to eradicate cancer. The profits from CNIO Arte sales go entirely to finance research at the CNIO, throughout ‘CNIO Friends’ philanthropic initiative.
Two exceptional women participated in the first edition of CNIO Arte 2018, the famous visual artist Eva Lootz and the pioneering scientist in molecular biology Margarita Salas. The second edition of CNIO Art, in 2019, brought together two equally admirable men, photographer Chema Madoz, internationally renowned conceptual artist and scientist Ignacio Cirac, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching (Germany) and expert in quantum computing. The third edition of CNIO Art, in 2020, has also brought together two great personalities from the fields of art and science, the visual artist Carmen Calvo and the paleoanthropologist Juan Luis Arsuaga.
