Molecular Diagnostics

Unit Leader: Luis Lombardía

Introduction

The improvement in molecular diagnostic methods and the better knowledge of the human genome lead to a new concept of Medicine, in which molecular diagnosis plays a central role. After decades of basic research, the scientific community has characterized a series of genes and proteins involved in the development of cancer. The advances in molecular biology are helping scientists to develop diagnostic tests in order to discover tumors in their earliest stages when they are most effectively treated, and to a better detection of residual blasts. Early detection using the techniques of molecular biology is also helping to predict how patients will respond to particular forms of therapy. All these result in the development of more effective treatments and in a high quality of care for patients with cancer. In order to provide quality diagnostic services for patients with cancer, the CNIO has established the Molecular Diagnostic Department that offers the result of the research effort of this and other research centers all over the world to the clinical community.

The Molecular Diagnosis Department at CNIO is based on an expert multidisciplinary panel of professionals that offer specialized cytogenetics, immunohistological, and molecular genetics techniques habitually not available in the Hospitals of the National System of Health as a support to their current clinical services and diagnostic laboratories.

CNIO is a non-profit organization and we will only charge for the materials and personnel needed to perform the different tests.

The Molecular Diagnosis Department contains the following major sections:
