The general aims of this area are the attention, prevention, research and education in hereditary cancer. It tries to respond to the needs of those professionals who work with cancer patients, by evaluating, studying and counselling families with possible hereditary cancer syndromes. One narrow colaboration exists with a large number of Medical Oncologists, Endocrinologists, Geneticists, Gastroenterologists, Surgeons, and Gynaecologists, among others professionals, for the better attention in familial and hereditary cancer. This area also collaborates with universities, patient associations, and society in general to make the characteristics and molecular bases of hereditary cancer known.
In the Human Cancer Genetics Programme laboratories, genetic and cytogenetic studies are carried out. More than 30 cancer susceptibility genes are currently being studied in these labs.
