The Familial Cancer Consultancy carried out by the CNIO in close collaboration with the Medical Oncology Service at the Hospital Universitario de Fuenlabrada (HUF) focuses on familial and hereditary cancer management, prevention and research. The consultancy provides services to health professionals who provide care for patients with cancer, through the assessment, evaluation and counselling of families with increased genetic susceptibility to cancer. Consultancy members work closely together with teams of oncologists and professionals from other hospital services, for the care and follow up of patients. In addition to seeing patients in the hospital´s healthcare facilities at HUF, the consultancy provides services to other hospitals and health professionals anywhere in Spain.

Consultancy healthcare services include: 1) the systematic collection of information and assessment of personal and family history of cancer; 2) cancer genetics risk assessment and selection of appropriate genetic testing based on family history characteristics; 3) the collection of biological specimens necessary to conduct genetic studies; 4) genetic counselling, 5) planning of family studies based on genetic testing results, and 6) recommendations for risk  reduction and, in appropriate cases, clinical surveillance for patients at risk of cancer.

Specific genetic and cytogenetic studies are carried out in the laboratories of the CNIO´s Human Cancer Genetics Programme. More than 40 different cancer susceptibility genes are currently under investigation.
