This year, as every year, the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) has launched its summer session of the Laboratory Training Programme for university students in the Biomedical Sciences field. A few days ago seven of the eight selected students have joined us for this training; the last one will arrive next week.

The Summer Training programme, which has been organised since 2002, received over 700 requests from all over the world, from 90 countries and from some of the most prestigious universities in the world, such as Yale, Brown or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The successful candidates this year are Ranjitha Boopathy (India), Ana María García Marín (Spain), Ahmad Khalifa (Egypt), Marta Moreno (Spain), Ana Belén Plata Gómez (Spain) and Fernando Valenzuela Gómez (Spain). These students will spend eight weeks in the laboratories of Alfonso Valencia, Santiago Ramón, Alejo Efeyán, Manuel Valiente, Paco Real and Marisol Soengas, who was in charge of welcoming them on behalf of the Dean's office.

Over the last 14 years, almost 180 students have benefited from this summer training programme. Among them, students from Yale, Cornell, UCLA or Princeton. Many of them, after this first experience, prepared their doctoral theses at the Centre, a cause of great satisfaction for us.

We also welcomed Alberto Alonso, one of the winners of the 11th Spanish Biology Olympiad, who spent a few days at the CNIO obtaining first-hand knowledge on how a research centre works, and Almudena Ramírez García, Miriam Llorente dos Santos, Patricia Ubieto Capella and Rocío Garví Merino, who belong to the summer training programme of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).
