José Mota and Mago More encourage you to become a 'CNIO Friend': "With many bits, we do a lot!"

Madrid, 28 November, 2017

The Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) and its philanthropic initiative, 'CNIO Friends', launch a campaign featuring these two well-known comedians

The launch also coincides with the celebration of #GivingTuesday, the global day of giving

The big question is: how many laughs have they had to keep for themselves while doing this video? José Mota has laziness; his doctor, Mago More, laughs his head off. Two of the best Spanish humourists put in this video their ingenuity at the service of CNIO Friends, the initiative created so that any person or entity can contribute altruistically to cancer research. Mota and More are clear: "If many of us provide a bit, we will do a lot".

That is why they are CNIO Friends, and that is why they encourage us all to be a part of it. "Cancer is a problem that affects us all, we all have had, or will have, a family member or a friend with cancer," says Mago More. He is convinced that "the problems must be tackled at the root", hence his support for research: when it comes to curing cancer, the root is research.

CNIO Friends was born at the end of 2014 and already has more than 900 members. Thanks to their contributions, the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) has created a new programme to attract the best young cancer researchers. In addition, CNIO Friends has become a powerful platform to explain why it is so important to investigate, to understand in depth the mechanisms of cancer, in order to find the best treatments.

In Spain, cancer is the second most frequent cause of death, behind cardiovascular disease. However, thanks mainly to new drugs and prevention programs – two of the results of scientific research –, today almost half of cancers are cured. In some types of cancer, such as breast cancer, the cure levels exceed 80%. 20 years ago, these figures were unimaginable.

The CNIO is an international reference centre in the fight against cancer where about 400 researchers work to advance scientific knowledge and to translate this knowledge into clinical applications as quickly as possible for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Through CNIO Friends, the Centre joins the #GivingTuesday campaign, a global movement that wants to encourage and multiply the good actions of people.
