Personal Contributions

Since the CNIO was funded it has received support from people who feel identified with its main objective; the fight against cancer by scientific research, their contribution has helped shorten the long process of research discoveries and its transfer to cancer patients.

All these personal contributions arises from their personal belief that the fight against cancer mainly consists in the research in order to discover the unknown mechanisms of germination, development and dissemination that are implicated in all cancer diseases especially of those which until now have no treatment or cure.

We would like to mention several persons who generously contributed in a remarkable way to our work:

Legacy of Ms. Dolores Elósegui Huarte, who was born in Pamplona the 3rd of March of 1943. María Dolores worked for 20 years in an editorial and combined her profession with her love for painting, to which she dedicated various years of her Studies in the School of Arts and Crafts at the capital of Navarre. She died of skin cancer on December 18th 2001; she bequeathed part of her property to the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), who is lead by Mariano Barbacid, towards whom she felt great admiration and respect.  The administration Of CNIO decided to put the name of Mª Dolores Elósegui in one of their scientific meeting rooms, as recognition to her kind donation.  Her donation was used for the development of scientific communication activities of the centre.

Legacy of D. Francisco Quintián Alonso, who died in 2008 and designated the CNIO to be one of his heirs.  The cause of his death was not an oncological disease, but his personal will to favour the fight against cancer through the research at our centre, fills us up with gratitude.  His legacy will be used for the refurbishment and Conditioning of the laboratories of the new Clinical Research Programme.

The donation of Dña. Lucía Cuevas Pérez who believed in the value of the existence of an available treatment for the type of cancer she suffered from. She realized that there are still many things to discover in order to make this possible.  That is the reason why she decided to donate a significant amount which to continue the study of Hereditary Neoplasias.

The donation of D. Vicente Campos Hernández. Don Vicente donated to the CNIO a rustic land with in the municipality of Requena, Valencia. The land is 5478 square meters; it has been incorporated to the foundation assets, while waiting for a concrete objective for it.

In addition to these aids, which were sighted as example, there are others, from anonymous donors which contribute to the effort of those who compose this project.  As a testimony of these donations, the message of Marta was selected as it captures their commitments.

"Hello! Unfortunately, a lot of my relatives have passed away as a consequence of this disease and I always thought of collaborating to avoid that more people go through the same.  Nevertheless, I am a student and my economic situation is not that favourable or stable, therefore I can not affiliate myself to periodically contributions as offered the web page.  Could you provide me the account number so I could deposit a certain amount?  Thank you. Sincerely yours"

We express our deepest gratitude to all the people who contributed.  It is particularly important, for a centre like the CNIO, that the society perceives that the research centres, needs their direct support.

We are conscious of the importance of our work; we understand that the hope of finding answers through research, derivates from the quality of the questions of the scientists.
